Votes for ThailandThe short answer
November to February. Dry, warm and not yet at the April furnace, which is why everyone else goes then too.
The two coasts have opposite weather. When the Andaman side is wet, Koh Samui and the gulf islands are usually fine, so you can travel in the off season if you pick the right side.

- When to avoidApril, the hottest month, and the burning season in the north
Nonstop times from a few big hubs, to give you a sense of the distance. We have no idea which airport you are actually leaving from. Fares move weekly, so we leave those out.
When you land
- Airport to townThe Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes. For a taxi, use the public queue downstairs and make sure the meter goes on.
- Cash or cardCash for street food and markets, cards in malls and hotels. ATMs charge a flat fee per withdrawal, so take out more at once.
- Getting onlineTourist SIMs at the airport are genuinely good value here and take five minutes.
- What catches people outAnyone outside a temple telling you it is closed today. It is not.
What not to miss in Thailand
- Street food, from the busiest stallThe queue is the health inspection. One dish per stall, keep walking.
- An island that needs two boatsAnything reachable by minivan is full. The ones that take effort are still quiet.
- Chiang Mai and the northCooler, greener and slower than the south, with the best temples in the country.
- The night trainBangkok to Chiang Mai in a sleeper berth costs less than a hotel and saves a day.
