- Getting aroundScooters and private drivers on Bali, short flights and ferries between islands
- When to avoidJuly and August in south Bali, when the traffic becomes the trip
Nonstop times from a few big hubs, to give you a sense of the distance. We have no idea which airport you are actually leaving from. Fares move weekly, so we leave those out.
When you land
- Airport to townThere is no train. Grab and Gojek work but are kept out of some pickup zones, so either walk out to meet them or take the official airport taxi.
- Cash or cardCash for warungs and markets. Use machines attached to banks or supermarkets rather than standalone ones on the street.
- Getting onlineTelkomsel is the one with coverage once you leave the south. Buy from a proper shop, not a roadside stall.
- What catches people outRenting a scooter without the right licence voids your travel insurance, and police checks are routine.
What not to miss in Indonesia
- A volcano at sunriseBatur on Bali is the easy one, Ijen in Java is the strange one. Both start at two in the morning.
- Diving or snorkelling in the eastKomodo and Raja Ampat are among the richest reefs on the planet. Nusa Penida is the cheap version.
- Eating at a warungTwo dollars, better than the restaurants, and the reason people stay for months.
- Ubud before eight in the morningThe rice terraces and temples are quiet, cool and free for the first hour of the day.
