Amazing night life
The short answer
Go in late September. The sea is still warm, the crowds have gone home, and prices drop with them.
August on Santorini and Mykonos is the mistake almost everyone makes. For islands without the queues, take the ferry to Naxos, Milos or Sifnos instead.

Nonstop times from a few big hubs, to give you a sense of the distance. We have no idea which airport you are actually leaving from. Fares move weekly, so we leave those out.
When you land
- Airport to townMetro line 3 runs from the airport to Syntagma in about 40 minutes for around โฌ9. Airport taxis to the centre are a fixed fare, so agree it before you get in.
- Cash or cardCards work almost everywhere. Keep cash for island tavernas, ferries and anywhere with a handwritten menu.
- Getting onlineAirport SIMs cost roughly double. Buy from a Cosmote or Vodafone shop in town, or use an eSIM before you fly.
- What catches people outSeafront restaurants with photo menus and someone outside waving you in. Two streets back is half the price.
What not to miss in Greece
- The Acropolis at openingFirst slot of the day, before the tour groups and before the marble gets hot.
- One slow ferryDeck seat, a few hours, islands going past. It is the bit people remember.
- A village taverna, not a seafront oneWalk fifteen minutes inland. Half the price and twice the food.
- Samaria Gorge in CreteSixteen kilometres, downhill, open roughly May to October. Start at dawn.
