The short answer
May and October are the best of it: the sea is swimmable, the hills are green and the island is quiet.
Skip the resort strips. The Troodos villages, the Akamas peninsula and the old town of Nicosia are what the island actually is.

When you land
- Airport to townThere are no trains. Shuttle buses run from the airport to Larnaca, Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos, and most people collect a hire car instead.
- Cash or cardCards everywhere, but village tavernas and roadside kiosks often want cash.
- Getting onlineCheap prepaid from Cyta or Epic, both with desks at the airport.
- What catches people outDriving is on the left, and hire cars carry red plates that some local drivers treat as an invitation to overtake.
What not to miss in Cyprus
- A full meze, with time to spareTwenty small plates, three hours, one village taverna. Do not eat lunch first.
- The Troodos mountainsPainted churches, cold streams and pine forest, forty minutes from the beach.
- The Akamas coastThe last undeveloped stretch. Walk the Aphrodite trail early, there is no shade.
- Nicosia old townThe last divided capital in Europe, and a genuinely strange, good afternoon.
