November to March. Outside those months the heat is genuinely limiting, and in July it is above 40C at midnight.
Two or three days covers Dubai. Abu Dhabi, the mountains at Hatta and the east coast are the parts most visitors never see.

When you land
- Airport to townThe red metro line runs from both terminals into the city in about 30 minutes, and taxis are metered and cheap.
- Cash or cardCard for everything. Cash is really only for the souks and the odd taxi.
- Getting onlineAirport SIMs cost about double. Buy from a du or Etisalat counter in any mall.
- What catches people outAlcohol is sold only in licensed hotels and bars, and it is priced accordingly.
What not to miss in United Arab Emirates
- Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu DhabiFree, extraordinary, and best in the last hour before sunset.
- The old creek in DeiraCross on an abra for about a dirham. The spice and gold souks are on the other side.
- The desert, overnightDay trips are a bus and a dune. Staying out means silence and the sky.
- Hatta and the east coastMountains, wadis and empty beaches two hours from the skyline.
